Pottery Song

Remember the old Mary Hopkins song "Those Were The Days My Friend." ?

Here's a pottery-related version that kept going around in my head until I finally wrote it down. Hope you get as much fun reading/singing it as I did writing it!

If you don't know the tune just start the audio file below for a sample. It takes a few seconds to start.

THAT WAS THE GLAZE, MY FRIEND

(To the tune of Those Were The Days My Friend - Mary Hopkins)

Once upon a time there was a pottery
Where we used to test a glaze or two
Remember how we'd blend away for hours
Dreaming of the copper reds we'd do

That was the glaze, my friend
We thought we'd never end
We'd mix and sieve for ever and a day
Close up the kiln and light
Reduce with all your might
For we were keen and sure to find our glaze
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Many recipes went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
Sang-de-Boeuf and Peach Bloom were elusive
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

That was the glaze, my friend
We thought we'd never end
We'd mix and sieve for ever and a day
Close up the kiln and light
Reduce with all your might
That was the glaze, oh yes that was the glaze
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Different clays and different fuels, we tested
Fibre kilns and brick kilns were all tried
Oxidation soak after reduction
When we got the samples out we died

That was the glaze, my friend
We thought we'd never end
We'd mix and sieve for ever and a day
Close up the kiln and light
Reduce with all your might
That was the glaze, oh yes that was the glaze
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Just tonight I gazed upon the test tiles
Nothing seemed the way it ought to be
In the glaze I saw a strange reflection
Was that puzzled potter really me?

That was the glaze, my friend
We thought we'd never end
We'd mix and sieve for ever and a day
Close up the kiln and light
Reduce with all your might
That was the glaze, oh yes that was the glaze
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

From the kiln there came another test set
Close to what we seek, but somehow tame
Oh, my friend , we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same…….

That copper red my friend
We'll get there in the end
We'll sing and dance for ever and a day
It will not run and stick
And it won't be too thick
That is the glaze
Oh yes that is the glaze
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
